Chief of City Agriculture, Emelita Miguel announced that Koronadal City could soon be the countries major producer for Dragon fruit as it pushes for more plantations of the crop.
Miguel said that the city is currently examining potential sites within its borders that would provide for the high-value crop.
The Agriculture chief said that a number of farmers have already started growing the fruit the past years through diversified farming.
As part of the initiative, the city has distributed free dragon fruit seedlings to its local farmers and interested citizens in its demonstration farm at Barangay General Paulino Santos.
The city has also offered training programs for the crops proper growing and planting methods key to its propagation.
Seedlings were acquired by the aid of the Department of Agriculture - Region 12, initiated by the South Cotabato Farmer's Association.
