Conference empowers journos on sharing scholarly works

AJRC McLuhan forum features McLuhan Fellow Jeff Canoy of ABS-CBN

The Asian Journalism Research Conference (AJRC) organized by the University of the Philippines (UP), College of Mass Communication (CMC), Journalism Department with the Universiti Sains Malaysia School of Communication, University of Sto. Tomas Journalism program and academic partners Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the Trinity University of Asia, successfully took off last April 12, with the theme, "Journalism in Crisis, Crisis in Journalism.

Keynote lecture was given by Dr. Edson Tandoc Jr. from Nanyang Technological University followed by a special intermission number by "Kontra-Gapi."

Introduction to the McLuhan forum was delivered by no less than the Ambassador of Canada, Hon. John T. Holmes, while keynote was given by McLuhan Fellow Jeff Canoy from ABS-CBN with Tress Reyes from CNN Philippines, serving as the reactor.

The Chit Estella Competition commenced after lunch with parallel sessions on Academic Research (News Analysis and Journalism Studies), Investigative Journalism and Special Projects.  Participating schools were:  UP Diliman, UP Cebu, PUP Manila, Ateneo de Manila, Palawan State University, Trinity University of Asia, St. Paul University QC, University of Santo Tomas and Southern Luzon State University.

A discussion pertaining to digital media by Patricia Viray from the Newslab Project was also held before the awarding of winners. 

AJRC is being held annually to promote academic research in Journalism as well as print, broadcast and online in-depth projects. It also provides a venue for students to share their work with fellow students across the nation.
